First Reconciliation & First Holy Communion Preparation Program: 2020 – 2021

Welcome to this year’s Sacramental Preparation for children preparing for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation (or First Confession) and First Holy Communion. (The terms Confession and Reconciliation are interchangeable but I generally use the term Reconciliation to capture the fullness of the sacrament). Generally, both First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are received when children are in grade two but no worries if your child is older.

Some of you may not have received your first Confession until you were in grade 4 or thereabouts. Some years ago this was adjusted so that children receive the grace of the Sacrament of Confession/Reconciliation prior to receiving the Body & Blood of Jesus in Holy Communion.

This year’s sacramental preparation will have some similarities to years gone by and some differences as well. Covid-19 presents some challenges to what we are able to do in gathered settings, but at the same time brings some fresh new ideas to the table. This year’s preparation program will be a combination of at home parent/child reading and weekly emailed videos featuring various family activities and video clips to reinforce the material covered in each week’s reading pages. There will also be a short follow up activity to email to me once you’ve completed each week’s lesson. Parents are the first and primary educators of faith for children and this is a wonderful opportunity for an at home or “domestic church” experience. Many thanks to Stephanie Konstantinou who will be partnering with me for this year’s sacramental preparation program and will be the voice you hear on the videos.

Something to bear in mind: The 1st Reconciliation & 1st Holy Communion program outlined below is specifically for St. Michael & Sacred Heart Catholic Parishes. Please note, there is no obligation to have your child receive the sacraments at their school affiliated parish. If you normally attend a church other than Sacred Heart or St. Michael and you wish to have your child receive the sacraments there, please contact that parish office to register your child for their preparation program.

Parent Meeting

This letter is in lieu of our usual in person parent meeting. Details of the preparation program and celebration of the sacraments are noted below. Please read through all of this information carefully. If you have any questions, two optional ZOOM question period sessions have been set up on the days and times and are listed under “QUICK LINKS” to the left.

Sacramental Preparation Workbooks

This year we will once again be using the We Prepare for Reconciliation and We Share in the Eucharist workbooks. These workbooks do a very solid job of combining sacramental teaching with prayer, scripture and references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. These workbooks are very user friendly with a Family Guide inserted in the centre portion of each book and colour coded lesson and review pages. If you have access to a set of books from previous years there is no need for you to purchase a new set. For those of you who do require a set of books, these are available through the parish office so please let us know that you require a set of books when registering your child. There is a resource fee of $25 for the books and this may be paid by check (payable to either church), cash or e-transfer. If using e-transfer, for St Michael, use stmichaelbg@dol.ca; for Sacred Heart, use shsarnia@dol.ca. In the message field please note your child’s name and First Communion resource fee. If you cannot afford to pay the resource fee, please let us know. No one will be denied the sacrament for financial reasons.

Registration Form

Signatures of both parents are required on the registration form. Please print and complete the registration form. The registration form and any additional required paperwork (see A below) may be returned to us by email (smsh@dol.ca), fax (519-333-6897) or by paper copy to either parish office. The deadline to register for the sacraments is Monday, December 14. Please note the following on the registration form:

A) Possible Additional Paperwork Required
i. Baptism Certificate – A photocopy (or picture) of your child’s baptismal certificate is required – if your child was not baptized at St. Michael Church, Bright’s Grove or at Sacred Heart Church, Sarnia. If you do not have a copy of your child’s baptism certificate, please contact the parish of baptism and ask them to email or fax us a copy of your child’s baptism certificate. (If your child was baptized at SM or SH parish we have their baptism record on file).
ii. Parent Sacramental Consent Form – If both parents are not available to sign the registration form, please have this form completed, signed and returned to us by the other parent.
B) Request for Baptism Box – Please check this box on the registration form if your child has not been baptized or has been baptized in another Christian faith and you will be contacted about a few additional steps that are required. In the meantime, continue with all steps of Sacramental Preparation.
C) Email addresses – Communications from the parish (including weekly videos) will be delivered via email so it is imperative that we have your correct email address. Please fill this in carefully.
D) Permission to Share Information with Schools – Your signed consent allows us to share the parish sacramental records with the schools. This helps the schools keep their records up-to-date and saves you having to look for the information down the road.

Email Address Test

Within 3 days of receiving your registration form I will be sending you an email to verify that we have correctly entered your email address into our contact list. If you DO NOT receive an email within 3 days, please phone the parish office to let us know (519-344-2992 ext. 0). Remember to check your junk mail inbox and adjust your settings accordingly to receive our emails.

First Reconciliation & First Communion Preparation Dates & Lesson Schedule

Both First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion will have weekly at home lesson schedules. A full lesson and video schedule will be emailed to you in mid-December. First Reconciliation preparation will begin the week of January 4 and will conclude in mid-February with the children receiving the Sacrament of First Reconciliation/Confession. First Holy Communion preparation will take place through March and April with First Communions beginning the last week of April and through the month of May. Specific dates will follow at a later time.
